GROUP ACTION AGAINST EQC – Group now forming after meeting at Cardboard Cathedral

Around two hundred people turned up to the Cardboard Cathedral this evening with a view to joining legal proceedings against EQC. Law firm Anthony Harper called the meeting following a strong response to their recent call for interested homeowners to unite to take on EQC.

Lawyer Simon Munro says that, while there is strong interest at this stage, there is not yet any guarantee that the proceeding will go ahead.

"That was the purpose of the meeting – to provide homeowners interested in coming together to take on EQC with the information they need in order to join the action."

Munro says that the level of interest in the proposed action has meant that Anthony Harper is able to offer to cap each homeowner's cash contribution to the costs of the action at a maximum of $2,000.

"We hope that for most people, considering their home is at stake, the payments will be manageable at that level," he says. "It is a risk for Anthony Harper to take, but we believe it is an important issue that needs to be resolved".

Munro confirmed that there were many more who were interested in joining the group action who could not attend the meeting.

"Some do not live in Christchurch, others were just not able to make it along tonight. Either way, we will be sending all the information those people need to sign up by email. They will not miss out just because they were not at the meeting," he says.

Similarly, those who had not yet registered with Anthony Harper can still join the group. Anyone interested in joining the action is encouraged to email their details (name, address of the property, and contact details) to groupaction@ah.co.nz.
