Young Auctioneer Title
The 2013 Heartland Bank Young Auctioneers Competition, held at last week’s Canterbury A Show, was won by Chris Hay of NZ Farmers Livestock. Eight auctioneers from throughout New Zealand competed in the second year of the competition.
Chris has been with NZ Farmers Livestock for two years, working as a livestock representative for the Wanganui/Waverley area. The stock firm also has agents in Manawatu, King Country and Waikato. Chris has been auctioneering for the past 14 months on a sporadic basis and hopes to gain more experience in the future.
Each entrant in the competition was required to attend a preliminary final, followed by an interview to test their knowledge. The top 5 entrants, based on points, tested their auctioneering skills selling two live beasts in a mock auction on the Friday afternoon of the Canterbury A Show, in front of Showday crowds.
Judges commented that it was a very even competition with the first three entrants close in points for delivery and speech, during the mock auction. “Owing to a lack of experience, the entrants’ knowledge of the rules, terms and conditions of sale was not quite as expected. Although for the amount of auctioneering that the entrants would have experienced, the overall standard was very good. This is proving to be a very popular event at the Canterbury A Show” commented competition judge John Honeybone from Rural Livestock.
Chris was awarded the New Zealand Stock & Station Agents Association Young Auctioneers Trophy, $2000 from Heartland Bank and a $500 Swanndri clothing voucher. Chris will attend the 2014 Sydney Royal Easter Show to view the Australian Young Auctioneers Competition.
Future plans for the competition include expanding the number of entrants and running a semi-final in the North Island.
