New Float to grace Christmas Parade

Click for big version.

Christmas is already on the doorstep and there is no better way to announce the arrival of the festive season than with a parade. This year the Wanganui Christmas Parade will take place on Saturday the 30th of November at 2pm and organisers Mainstreet Wanganui hope it will be a corker with many fantastic community floats already entered. One such float has been built by the team at the Whanganui Men’s Shed and was funded by a donation from Rotary Wanganui. The float was inspired by the story of Cinderella and will be the first pedal powered float in the parade. Volunteers at The Men’s Shed have spent 6 months working on the float.

Mainstreet Wanganui and The Whanganui Men’s Shed collaborated on the concept and the new float will be added to the others in permanent storage and used each year to brighten up the parade. “We have some floats for boys in the parade, such as the train, the tram and the pirate ship, we felt it was time the girls had something” says Mainstreet Marketing Manager Elise Goodge.

More FM will be running a competition to find two princesses to ride in the new float at the head of the parade so if you have a little princess in your family be sure to visit their Facebook page www.facebook.com/pages/Jase-and-Sue-at-928-More-FM-Wanganui for details or email smiller@mediaworks.co.nz.

Mainstreet Wanganui has also been working with the Ulysses Club who have timed their annual Toy Run to coincide with the parade this year. They will finish the Toy Run at Moutoa Gardens/Pakaitore at 2.15pm where people will be able to make donations of toys for children and help local families this Christmas. All donated toys will be given to the Salvation Army who will pass them on to those most in need of assistance. They have asked that people donate new toys rather than second hand and please no soft toys as they already have plenty.

The Wanganui Community Choir will also be performing after the parade at Moutoa Gardens followed by a giant lolly scramble and the winners of this year’s float awards will be announced so be sure to stick around at the end and join in the fun.
