Banks Peninsula Zone Committee meeting

18 November 2013

Banks Peninsula Zone Committee meeting

The Canterbury Water Banks Peninsula Zone Committee will meet for its regular monthly public meeting on Tuesday, 19 November, in Little River.

The focus for the meeting will be on the sub-regional planning processes for the Wairewa / Lake Forsyth catchment. The zone committee is tasked with working with community members to develop solutions to local water management challenges.

In early August the committee hosted a community open day with Environment Canterbury and Christchurch City Council to gather the thoughts of the community on the lake. This was followed by workshops in September and November.

Workshop participants have been helping to develop actions to improve the current state of the water resource in the catchment, including the lake, and these actions will be reflected in the Wairewa sub-regional section of the proposed Land & Water Regional Plan (pLWRP).

The pLWRP is designed to deliver the community’s aspirations for water management as outlined in the Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS). Some of the key issues that the community has raised about Wairewa / Lake Forsyth include water pollution, algal blooms, and flooding.

At the zone committee meeting, the committee will discuss the outcomes from November’s workshop, review an initial draft solutions package and how it aligns with the committee’s Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP) for water management, and agree on the next steps in the process.

Following this, the committee will receive an update from a Christchurch City Council Senior Policy Analyst on the Water Related Services Bylaw. A review is being undertaken to explore whether the bylaw should include a range of amendments relating to water conservation and recycling.

The meeting will finish with an update on the committee’s Immediate Steps biodiversity funding in the zone. The zone committee has $100,000 of funding a year for five years. There is still more than $300,000 available for local biodiversity projects so if you know of a project that would benefit from some funding contact Robyn Russ on 0800 324 636 or email robyn.russ@ecan.govt.nz .
