Santa’s back in town
The iconic Santa that welcomes shoppers to Auckland’s Queen St is now back on his yuletide perch.
Contractors have this morning (Sat. 9 Nov.) erected the giant replica of Santa Claus on the Whitcoulls building on the corner of Victoria Street West and Queen Street.
It’s a complex task and Mike Franklin from Gulf Projects says he and his team have lost count of how many times they have installed and then uninstalled the jolly fellow.
Twenty metres high and weighing in at two tonnes, Santa has been gracing the Whitcoulls Building since he migrated from the former Famers Building in Hobson Street via the company’s Manukau City store.
The nostalgic festive icon is now 53 years old and has undergone several bouts of plastic surgery over the years.
