Splash into summer at Council pools

Splash into summer at Council pools

Christchurch City Council is diving into summer with the opening of three outdoor swimming pools.

Jellie Park’s 50 metre pool and the Halswell Aquatic Centre will open on Saturday 16 November. Templeton Pool will open three weeks later on Saturday 7 December.

John Filsell, Unit Manager Recreation and Sports, says the openings are a welcome reminder that summer is on the way.

“It’s fantastic that these popular Christchurch facilities are reopening for the season. The outdoor pools provide a great venue for families to come together and share a day of fun in the sun.”

Returning again this year is the popular series of Summer Pool Parties, which kick off at Jellie Park later this month.

Sponsors MORE FM and Streets will be at each party with plenty of giveaways, competitions and prizes to keep children entertained. Details of all the summer pool parties will be broadcast on MORE FM (92.1FM).

Young ones will also have their chance to cool off this summer with the season opening of four Council paddling pools.

New Brighton Whale Pool, Christchurch Botanic Gardens Paddling Pool, Abberley Park Paddling Pool and the Woodham Park Paddling Pool will all open during show weekend, November 15-17.

Lyttelton Norman Kirk Memorial Pool and Waltham Pool will remain closed this season.

Both pools suffered extensive earthquake damage and have been prioritised under the Council’s Facilities Rebuild Plan.

Waltham Pool will undergo significant repair and improvement work while Lyttelton Norman Kirk Memorial Pool will be completely rebuilt. Both pools are expected to reopen for the 2014/15 summer season.
