Armistice Day Commemoration
Armistice Day Commemoration
On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the guns fell silent.
After four terrible years, the First World War finally came to an end with the signing of an armistice between Germany and the Allied Powers on 11 November 1918.
More than 18,000 New Zealanders died and tens of thousands more seriously wounded - over 5300 soldiers died in 1918 alone.
The Mayor, Jono Naylor said "During the Great War of 1914-1918, many New Zealanders who had little understanding of what it was they were fighting for left our shores to fight for a greater cause, the freedom of others. Many never returned, yet the freedom they fought and died for is still ours to enjoy today. Armistice Day provides us all with an opportunity to honour their sacrifice."
The public are invited to attend the service and laying of wreaths at the Cenotaph, in the Square, Palmerston North on Monday 11 November 2013, at 11.00am. War veterans, the Returned Services Association, and representatives from the Defence Forces will be in attendance.
All Veterans to form up in front of the Cenotaph (Medals and Beret) by 10.50am.
