700 kids, 3000 books
700 children will read approximately 3000 books while taking part in the Hastings District Libraries’ Summer Reading Programmes.
Online registrations for this year’s junior and Te Reo Maori reading programmes open on Monday 25th November at 10am. Intermediate and secondary school aged youth can register for the iRead and ReadPlus programmes with library staff.
Paula Murdoch, District Libraries Manager
recommends parents take this opportunity to register
children who need help with reading over the school
holidays.
“These programmes are designed to help children keep or improve the reading skills that they have worked hard to develop during the school year. Ideally, we would like to see more children enroll who haven’t experienced the programmes previously.”
The programmes will not be available at the Flaxmere Library this summer, as the facility is closed for renovations.
Paula says the number of places available in the junior programme at Hastings Library have been increased slightly, in the hope that some of our Flaxmere families will be able to visit this facility instead.
Families that don’t have access to the internet at home can visit the libraries to register and staff will be on hand to help with the process.
Online services are available during the programmes including arranging report-ins. “With the Hastings District encompassing almost 5200km², we need to consider those who don’t live in one of the urban areas close to a library. Our aim is to make the programmes accessible to families wherever they are during the summer.”
Parents are encouraged to talk with library staff about which programme is suitable for their children and ways they can support their literacy.
