Fun day at Lake Tikitapu for migrants

Fun day at Lake Tikitapu for migrants

Rotorua District Council (RDC) is hosting a fun day at Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake) this month for local migrants and newcomers to the district.

Day Out at Lake Tikitapu is happening on Saturday 16 November from 11am to 2pm. Migrants and other new Rotorua residents are invited to enjoy a picnic and activities at the lake, learn water safety tips, and find out about local watersports and clubs.

RDC Settlement Support Coordinator, Heather McAllister, said people of all ages can also have a go at boating and waka ama paddling, and meet other migrants at the event.

“Being on or near water has long been part of our Kiwi summers. Living in Rotorua we have access to 16 lakes, and the opportunity to enjoy some of the best fishing, swimming, boating, picnics, walking, and cycling trails in the country. Rotorua’s central location also means that it is not far to travel to a beach.

“However statistics show that over 100 people on average die each year from drowning. New Zealand’s annual drowning toll is one of the worst in the developed world.

“It’s timely, now that we’re experiencing warmer weather and summer is on its way, to introduce one of our beautiful lakes to newcomers. Not only will we share the enjoyment that can be had on the water, but also advise people how to be safe in and around it.”

Ms McAllister said people should bring lunch, something to sit on (seat, chair or mat), swimwear and a towel.
