Council on the lookout for youth leaders for 2014

Council on the lookout for youth leaders for 2014

Rotorua District Council (RDC) is on the lookout for the city’s future leaders' and is seeking applications from young people for the 2014 Rotorua District Youth Council (RDYC).

RDYC meets fortnightly to discuss current youth issues, learn about local government and decision-making, get involved in the community, and help give Rotorua youth a voice. Youth councillors also support and organise youth events and activities, and participate in various local and national initiatives.

RDC youth projects officer Jill Campbell says she is looking for a diverse group of 13 to 18 year olds who can offer a youth perspective to council decisions and other issues affecting young people.

“Youth councillors are given numerous opportunities to be involved in great community activities throughout their term on council.

“They bring together a mix of ethnicity, geographic location, gender and experience, and aim to encourage other youth participation in the community.”

She says youth councillors are expected to be able to problem-solve, work well in a team, have a keen interest in civic duty, be prepared to discuss issues affecting Rotorua’s young people, be good listeners and have a network of peers to share information with. And of course we make sure they have a lot of fun at the same time.

Rotorua District Youth Council will meet every second Tuesday during 2014, as well as attend initial training from 7 to 9 February.

Last day for applications is 2 December at 5pm. Fourteen youth councillors will be selected.
