Councillor Sharon Morgan appointed Deputy Mayor
Whangarei Mayor Sheryl Mai today named third-term Councillor Sharon Morgan as Deputy Mayor.
“It came as a complete shock to Sharon, but she is the right choice – she has already been a huge help,” Mayor Mai said.
“Sharon has twice been elected unopposed as Councillor for the Maungatapere/Mangakahia Ward. She is incredibly hard working, dedicated to the community and works well with a wide range of people.
“She has what it takes and I know we will form a great team.”
Mayor Mai said she wanted Councillor Morgan to take up the role of Deputy Mayor as early as possible to give clarity to the new Council.
The past week has been spent going over the roles, powers and responsibilities of a Mayor, the structures, systems and major projects within the Council.
“I have valued the opportunity to seek advice on committee structures and start developing our vision for the way this District will go forward,” she said.
Council is due to be sworn in at a public ceremony in the Capitaine Bougainville Theatre, Forum North, on 30 October. The first full meeting of Council, where structures will be adopted and appointments will be formalised, will be on 13 November.
