Prisoner Art Auction raises $15,000 for community youth group
The 2013 auction of artworks by South Island prisoners and community offenders, held on 18 October, has raised $15,000
for the Youth Alive Trust in New Brighton.
“Community youth programmes are causes close the heart of many of the contributing artists“ says Corrections Southern
Regional Commissioner, Ian Bourke. “The art auction offers offenders an opportunity make a positive contribution to
others in the community, and to showcase the Prison Art Programme and their new found talents.”
The exhibition included more than 210 watercolours, oils and pencil artworks, woodwork carvings and fabric and sculpture
by more than 90 prisoners.
Youth Alive Trust was chosen to receive the proceeds from the auction in support of the work it does with young people
in the city’s east.
Corrections offers a broad range of arts programmes for prisoners as constructive activities which can support their
rehabilitation and reintegration.
