New web resource launched in fight against sex abuse
A web portal launched in Auckland today will provide a unique new resource for information and support for all New
Zealanders affected by sexual abuse or offending.
At the launch of the new portal, called The Harbour, which has been developed in collaboration between several agencies,
Hon Paula Bennett, Minister for Social Development, welcomed the initiative as a positive new response to a serious
community challenge.
“Information is a powerful tool that can help people affected by sexual violence find a way to recover, by knowing where
and how to access the vital support and the services they need.
“The Harbour will provide a safe gateway to trusted, useful information, and is the result of another successful
collaboration between government and non-government organisations.”
Jacqui Dillon, CEO of Safe Network, said, “The Harbour addresses the reality that many people feel isolated or unsure
about what they should do or where they can go in attempting to address this issue when it comes into their own family
or community.
“The Harbour will be a resource for everyone affected by sexual abuse or offending, offering information and support
from a single trusted source, rather than having to visit multiple different agency sites.
The Harbour is designed for use by people actually or potentially affected by sexual abuse, actual or potential
offenders and people who may be concerned about the welfare of others. It provides help line numbers for immediate
support as well as advice on how to identify or seek help in responding to concerning behavior, she said.
The Harbour will extend its reach to encompass nationwide service provision details over the coming months.
The Harbour’s development has been led jointly by three agencies, SAFE, HELP and Rape Prevention Education supported by
Child Youth and Family and Community Services at the Ministry of Social Development. It also had generous support from
the Lottery Grants Board.
