Fire up for a spring weekend in Wellington
With fireworks set to light up weekend skies in the capital on Saturday 9 November, here’s five sure-fire ways to have a
cracker of a weekend in Wellington.
1. The Wellington Sky Show always strikes a chord with locals. This year a weekend fixture allows visitors a great excuse to head to the capital
to catch this impressive showcase. The 12-minute fireworks display on Saturday 9 November will illuminate the sky over Wellington Harbour. Using the iconic
floating crane Hikitia to create a breath-taking exhibition, the fireworks show is set to a soundtrack by local and
internationally-renowned drumming and percussion group, Strike.
2. Refuel and enjoy cooking with fire at Wellington’s newest addition, Charley Noble (1 Post Office Square). This much-anticipated eatery from Paul Hoather of The White House showcases wood-fired cooking, local ingredients, natural wine and craft beers. A haven for lovers of both seafood and
meat. The seafood bar has a choice of freshly shucked oysters and diamond shell clams, along with crudo kingfish, tuna & salmon, ceviche and house gin-cured salmon. The Zesti wood fired char grill and rotisserie (the first of its kind in
New Zealand) serves up organic cuts of aged, pasture fed and grain fed beef. Diners can choose their portion size too;
anything from 100gm to 500gm.
3. Burn the candle at both ends and start your day with a visit to Te Papa’s Colour & Light: Impressionism from France & America. Monet, Degas, Renoir, and their disciples set Paris ablaze with their revolutionary treatment of light and colour, and
a fresh emphasis on the everyday. While at Te Papa be sure to also visit Aztecs – Conquest & Glory. Fascinating, dramatic and ultimately tragic, the story of the Aztec civilisation is hard core history. Presenting
hundreds of cultural treasures from Mexico's major museums, this exhibition will immerse you in a complex world of
splendour and dark intrigue.
4. Intermission during New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’s Fireworks and Fantasy will be extended to accommodate the city’s fireworks display. See the NZSO perform the stunning Symphonie Fantastique
by Berlioz, a descriptive work of passion, obsession and violence.
5. Fire up the dance floor at Mighty Mighty (upstairs 104 Cuba St). If Wellington was a bar, it would be Mighty Mighty. Upstairs in the pumping heart of Cuba Street, this legendary bar
is a bright explosion of colour, quirk, sound and good times. Bands feature all the time and DJs play until late. So,
get your groove on and cut a rug on Cuba.
