Water Now Available for Showers & Laundry
RAETIHI DIESEL SPILL - #16
Water Now Available for
Showers & Laundry
The Medical Officer of Health for the Waimarino area has given the all-clear for Raetihi residents to use the reticulated water supply for showers and laundry.
The all-clear to use reticulated water for drinking and cooking however is still waiting on test results from water samples taken yesterday which are expected for this coming Monday (21 October 2013).
Ruapehu District Council (RDC) Chief Executive and Civil Defence Controller, Peter Till, said that people should ensure that they flush their plumbing as per Council’s instructions before using the water for showers or the laundry.
“Being able to give residents the go ahead to use their own showers and laundry is fantastic,” he said.
“Everyone involved in the response effort is ecstatic that we have reached this point as soon as we have.”
“Initially based on diesel contamination events at other locations we felt that reaching this point would have taken longer than it has.”
“Despite the inevitable issues and problems that have come up the recovery efforts have gone extremely well with Council staff, our contractors and response agency partners all doing an amazing job.”
Mr Till said that Council has is confident that the water samples that are currently being tested to confirm whether the all-clear on using reticulated water for drinking will be fine.
“However, until these test results are in, and the Medical Officer of Health gives the official clearance, we would urge residents to only use reticulated water for showers, laundry and toilet flushing,” he said.
“On Tuesday next week (22 October) Council has organised another public meeting at the Raetihi Cosmopolitan Club which will discuss the timing and issues around starting to remove the emergency services that have been put in place.”
“Raetihi residents have been able to flush their toilets since the reticulated water was back on last weekend allowing us to start removing the port-a-loos.”
“The water deliveries and showers will continue until we have consulted with the community.”
