Ongoing commitment to the arts in the Southern Lake
Modest surplus and ongoing commitment to the arts in the
Southern Lakes
We were pleased to announce at our AGM this week that Festival of Colour 2013 achieved a very modest surplus of $529. This is thanks to our sponsors and funders, patrons and benefactors and record ticket sales. Festival Chair Hetty Van Hale said in her Chair’s report that the fifth biennial festival continued to build on its reputation as the ‘best little arts festival in New Zealand’. “The quality of programming, the number of people that engage with the Festival, the audience appreciation, the welcome for performers, along with strong community support all ensure that we continue to be regarded as one of the best in the country,” she said.

Hetty thanked key grant makers Creative New Zealand, Central Lakes Trust and the Community Trust of Otago, as well as gold sponsor Aurora and the 150 festival patrons and benefactors who she called ‘the core stakeholders in the festival, contributing financially to ensure we can keep ticket prices low’. In particular, she praised CNZ’s Creative Giving initiative that enabled new or increased public contributions to be matched by the national body.
Festival Director Philip Tremewan also outlined plans for an off-year programme in 2014 including a ‘festival of ideas’ based on the main programme’s highly popular Aspiring Conversations sessions, and other one off performances such as Lawrence Arabia.
