Waikato district arts community receives a financial boost
More than $18,000 worth of funding has been granted to support the creativity in Waikato district communities.
Waikato District Council’s Creative Communities Scheme Assessment Committee met recently and approved 14 requests for
funding for a range of activities around the district.
The scheme, a collaboration between councils and Creative New Zealand (CNZ) and fully funded by CNZ, supports
opportunities for New Zealanders to participate in the arts.
Onewhero Society of Performing Arts was granted $1,000 for a musical production and a further $676.71 for a short film
competition while Port Waikato’s Art at the Port received $1,500 for community workshops and Tuakau’s Soul of Art
Community received $1,430.50 for a live painting workshop.
St Anthony’s School in Huntly received $500 for mural art workshops and Ngaruawahia’s Nga Miro Health Centre was granted
$1,280 for a glass art workshop while the Twin Rivers Arts Council Ngaruawahia received $822 for a visual arts workshop
and $628.50 went to Gailbraith Kindergarten in Ngaruawahia for a mosaic workshop.
Over in Raglan, Whaingaroa Youth Movement received $1,220 for an outdoor dance performance, Surfside Christian Centre
received $2,500 for Christmas in the Park music festival and $3,000 went to Raglan Art to Wear for a wearable arts show.
Raglan Community Arts Council received $2,000 for after school workshops and $1,486 for Raglan Arts Weekend and Natasha
Rao was granted $750 for clay workshops.
The Council’s Chief Executive Gavin Ion said the applications received were of a very high standard and the projects
would be enjoyed by many.
The next Creative Communities funding round opens in February 2014.
