Iconic Wellington restaurant, Boulcott Street Bistro celebrates 22 years of hospitality this week. Making it one of Wellington’s longest standing eating places.
On the 16th of October 1991, John Lawrence and Chris Green took on the lease of the historic Plimmer House and set up shop. With ambition and a lot of hard work they created a recipe for success; the warm and welcoming gourmet bistro has become a much loved destination on Wellington’s culinary map.
Green is now head chef and owner of Arbitrageur (Wellington). His long time friend and fellow chef Rex Morgan has been chef/partner at Boulcott Street Bistro since 2009.
“Boulcott has always maintained a high standard of classic dishes with a contemporary NZ edge, the service is casual and friendly, and I think people enjoy that,” Morgan says.
Cusine queen and caterer Ruth Pretty said of Boulcott’s longevity, “It’s a testament to the owners that quality and continuity matters. Many Wellingtonian’s feel that Boulcott is in their DNA.
“I think the success is very reflective of Wellington’s culture. It’s always been about local support, friends and family; my wife Chrissy runs her florist business from the office we share out the back of the restaurant and our daughter Hannah is waitressing with us while finishing her studies,” says Lawrence, owner of Boulcott Street Bistro since day one
“Friends of friends, children of friends and friends of children, have all at somestage made up our team whether doing dishes, working the floor or supplying produce.
“That’s what makes the hospitality industry such a great one to be in, it’s as much about the people as it is about food,” says Lawrence.
Boulcott Street Bistro will be celebrating 22 years of hospitality with a (culinary) trip down memory lane and serving a collaborative menu of classics selected by chefs past and present; Chris Green, John Allred and Rex Morgan. The Retro Menu will be on offer for lunch and dinner for the week Monday 14th – Sunday 20th October.
