Five new faces for Northland Regional Council

Date: 14 October, 2013

Five new faces for Northland Regional Council

Dennis Bowman, Paul Dimery, Dover Samuels, Bill Shepherd and David Sinclair look set to be five new faces on a new-look nine-member Northland Regional Council after Saturday’s election.

Councillor Bowman will represent the council’s new Te Hiku constituency, Cr Dimery the new Coastal Central constituency, Crs Shepherd and Samuels the new Coastal North constituency and Cr Sinclair will represent Whangarei Urban.

Joining Cr Sinclair as a Whangarei Urban representative will be returning councillor John Bain. The chair of the previous council, Craig Brown, will return as Coastal South constituency representative and also returning to council is Hokianga-Kaikohe representative Joe Carr. Councillor Graeme Ramsey is also back for another term as Kaipara representative.

This election signals a number of changes for the council’s elected representatives.

For starters there will be an extra, ninth council member and councillors will now represent one of seven new constituencies, replacing the three previous wards based on district boundaries.

Two members of the previous council Tony Davies-Colley and Ian Walker did not stand for council while former councillors Bronwyn Hunt and Bill Rossiter’s bids for re-election were unsuccessful on election day.

Vibeke Wright, the council’s electoral official, says final votes are expected to be confirmed on Thursday (Subs: 17 October).

Ms Wright says councillors are expected to be formally sworn in at a meeting in Whangarei on Wednesday 30 October. Among the new council’s first tasks at that meeting will be to elect a chairman and a deputy.
