Help in the hunt for heritage

Help in the hunt for heritage

Cantabrians are being asked to dust off their family albums, dig out any boxes of old snaps, and do their bit to preserve the region’s heritage.

Christchurch City Libraries is about to launch its annual Photo Hunt, encouraging people throughout Canterbury to send in images from their own collections, and help reconnect us all with heritage through growing its photographic archive.

This year’s competition is being run in conjunction with the Council’s one-off heritage event Reconnect: experience heritage, with photos sought to fit the theme ‘Reconnecting with Canterbury heritage’. The categories are people (families, cultural and social events) and places (buildings, suburbs and the city). Images can be from any era, depicting any facet of Christchurch’s growth, development, social life or events in the city’s past.

As well as helping to boost important historical records, entrants are in line for some great prizes, including a tablet and one of three e-readers.

Christchurch City Council Content Manager (Libraries) Anne Anderson says the team always looks forward to seeing the gems that people uncover.

“Everyday photos of people’s families, friends, places and events may seem ordinary enough when they are taken, but in time, these images form an amazing visual record of the changing face of Christchurch, helping us all understand where we’ve come from as a city.”

“People seem to really enjoy revisiting their own photo collections, and then sharing some of the treasures they unearth. We’re really excited about seeing what comes through under the ‘reconnecting’ theme this year.”
