The challenges and opportunities of starting life in a new land are the focus of a discussion at the National Library this week.

Women from different ethnic backgrounds will share their insights about developing their careers in New Zealand, bringing up families in a foreign land, building capacity for community, and actively playing a role in making a difference in the New Zealand society in a  discussion at the National Library in Wellington on Saturday October 12th.

The event will include opportunities for the audience to join with the panel in reflecting on the past and present and looking forward to the future.

The discussion will be chaired by Dr. Pushpa Wood, who migrated from India to New Zealand. Director of the Financial Literacy Centre, Massey University, she is recognised as a world expert in literacy and financial literacy.

The speakers are:

Annie Coates, originally from Myanmar; teacher and community worker, winner of the Prime Minister’s Social Hero Award

Elizabeth Chan, a Kiwi Chinese; Deputy Convenor of the Young Lawyer’s Committee

Anna Guenther, half American and half NZ; co-founder of PledgeMe, New Zealand first crowd-funding programme

Sudha Thomas, radiographer, who previously worked in India and the Middle East. Associated with the Hindu Council of New Zealand
