Brown calls on candidates to come clean on privatisation
Candidates for Auckland Council should come clean about whether they support privatisation or public ownership of the
region’s strategic public assets, says Mayor Len Brown.
“I support retaining public ownership of the port, airport shares and water company. The airport shares and the ports
and water companies deliver dividends which help us to invest in local communities and keep rates affordable,” Len Brown
said.
“If re-elected, I will oppose any move to sell-off these core assets.
“This is an important issue for the Council election. In the past, candidates have been elected to councils by hiding
their true intentions about privatisations and then proceeded to sell -off the family silverware.
“This is despite there being overwhelming public support for the retention of key strategic assets.
“This time candidates for council – not just the mayoral contest but also councillors - should stand on their record of
support or otherwise for strategic public assets, and outline what their position will be in the new council.
“Aucklanders should know where their council candidates stand on this issue.”
