Calling all deserving Wellington kids: Fancy a new set of wheels?
2012 Bikes for Kids Recipients at Little River School
Variety- The Children’s Charity is calling for nominations for Wellington kids to receive a brand-spanking new bike.
450 bikes will be given out as part of this year’s Bikes for Kids tour. The tour will take place from November 4 - 9 and cover the central and lower north island.
Commencing in Cambridge, the bike-laden truck will travel to Rotorua, Kawerau, Whakatane, Opotiki, Gisborne, Wairoa, Napier, Hastings and Wellington. Variety encourages schools and communities in these areas to nominate a deserving child to receive a bike.
CEO of Variety, Lorraine Taylor, says that every child should be able to experience the thrill of having their very own bike. “Riding a bike is a child’s prerogative - something that provides them with a sense of independence. However for many Kiwi Kids certain circumstances mean they miss out. We are encouraging teachers, parents, caregivers, friends and grandparents to nominate a child aged between seven and nine from these areas to receive a brand new bike and helmet from Variety.”
To receive a bike a child needs to be:
• Aged between 7 and 9 years (between 111 cm and 135 cm tall)
• Socio-economically disadvantaged, with their family not in a position to purchase a bike OR
• Have recently overcome some adverse circumstances OR
• A child who is a role model to others, consistently making a difference within their school and community environments and showing an outstanding ability to assist those around them
The annual Bikes for Kids Tour is part of the Variety Kids on the Move programme, providing life-enriching assistance to Kiwi kids. Variety believes the recognition of being gifted a bike provides an incentive for peers to become good school and community citizens.
Nomination forms can be downloaded from www.variety.org.nz or call 09 520 4111 for more information.  Or for a donation of $200 you can buy a kiwi kid their very own bike and helmet.
Variety would like to thank The Warehouse, AvantiPlus, Ford, TR Group, Zurich and Kiwi Ball in Dubai for their generous support of Bikes for Kids.
Nomination deadline is October 18.
