Kawerau rafting festival announced
The 2013 World Rafting Champs are about much more than the excitement and thrills of elite white water competition in Kawerau. Plans are coming together and events and activities are being confirmed for The Eventfinda Global Water House – the festival that will sit alongside the World Rafting Championships.
The Festival will take place at Waterhouse Street Reserve, off River Road in Kawerau. There will be events and activities for everyone during the main race day on 23rd November. A mega inflatable city provided by Funworks, will be set up in the reserve. Some of the structures are more than 15 metres long and they will provide hours of amusement for kids of all ages.
In addition, a giant LED movie screen will be available thanks to generous funding from the Eastern Bay Energy Trust. The screen is five metres by four metres and will be used to play live footage from all the race day rafting action in Kawerau from 13 to 24 November.
Eastern Bay Energy Trust chairman Don Lewell said the trustees were happy to support this world-class event.
“It is important that the general public can be involved in the festivities. The Trust’s funding means that locals and visitors alike will be able to watch the races on the large screens, keeping the riverbank safe for competitors. A huge amount of work has been put in by Kawerau District Council and the organisers, and Trust funding will help to ensure that not only is the event is  a success, but also that the Eastern Bay of Plenty is showcased and benefits from the influx of visitors,” Mr Lewell said.
The Global Water House Festival will also feature food, stalls, activities, music, and the Adopt a Nation dome, displaying work from Kawerau junior school students. You can keep up to date with new activities as they are confirmed for the event at www.kaweraudc.govt.nz/Global  or on the IRF 2013 White Water Rafting Championships Facebook page.
