Committee recommends to replace Scarborough pool

Committee recommends to replace Scarborough pool

The Council’s Community Recreation and Culture Committee yesterday received a verbal update from staff about the Scarborough Paddling Pool and has requested that an urgent report go to Council next week on indicative costs and timeframes to replace it.

The Council agreed in March this year to demolish the paddling pool, which was damaged beyond repair, and return the area to grassed lawn while the long term future of the site is considered. The demolition took place in July 2013. Council staff recently engaged the community via the local Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board over the future of the paddling pool and recommendations arising from this process were discussed with the Committee.

The committee requested that a report on this issue brought to Council next week with information on how the rebuild of Scarborough Paddling Pool can be funded with indicative costs and timeframes in support of the community recommendations. The committee notes this is a priority project and is committed to seeing it completed as soon as possible. This is consistent with Council’s resolution in response to submissions to the Three Year Plan that requested staff look at how it could be rebuilt for this summer.

Committee Chair Councillor Yani Johanson says the committee is excited about the ideas that have come forward in regards to potential replacement.

“Paddling pools are well used places in our city that are much loved and sorely missed. They provide a fantastic place for young families to have fun and enjoy the outdoors. Among the exciting concepts for the future of the Scarborough Paddling pool is combining the traditional with the new by incorporating a modern splash pad.”
