Work set to being on Globe redevelopment

The tender for the redevelopment of the Globe Theatre has been awarded and work on the development will begin by the end of the month.

The project includes the addition of a café/bar and a 100 seat flat floor auditorium that will be used for performances, training and rehearsal space.

McMillan & Lockwood Group have been awarded the contract for the $1.7 million dollar development.

The total project cost is just over $2million, including fit out and fees.

In all $1.119 million has been raised for the project with generous donations coming from NZ Lotteries, the Central Energy Trust, Eastern and Central Community Trust, New Zealand Community Trust and others. The remainder $984,494 will be funded by Palmerston North City Council.

Palmerston North Mayor, Jono Naylor says news work on the project would start before the end of the month was very exciting.

“McMillan & Lockwood worked on Te Manawa and Regent projects, delivering an exceptionally high standard of workmanship to both of these significant Council redevelopments.   I’m certain they’ll create a treasured community facility that will complement the cultural boulevard.”

A requirement of Palmerston North City Council’s support of the project was for the Globe Theatre Trust Board to raise funds for the fit-out.

Globe Theatre Trust Board Chairperson  Stephen Fisher says after many years of planning it is now very exciting to be able to continue to provide a facility that meets the needs of a diverse range of performing groups.

“The redevelopment will enhance the Globes reputation as a premier community theatre.”

Five companies tendered for the project ranging in price from $1.61M to $1,94M.

Parks and property manager John Brenkley says a weighted attributes evaluation was used to determine the successful tender and in this case McMillan & Lockwood won the day with their experienced personnel, professional approach to the execution of this complex project and excellent track record of on time delivery.
