Mayor’s double citizenship celebration
Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker marks a double milestone tomorrow, officiating over his 70th, and final, citizenship ceremony.
Throughout his six-year term, Mayor Parker has conferred citizenship on 6911 residents.
Mayor Parker says it is always an honour to grant citizenship to people from all over the world. “The diverse backgrounds and experiences of our new citizens will add richness to our continually evolving city.”
Despite the earthquakes, 1896 citizens were conferred in 2012, a significant increase from 477 in 2011.
Mayor Parker says, “Christchurch has undergone tremendous change in recent years, yet the large numbers of people continuing to seek citizenship is testament to our beautiful and vibrant city.”
In recognition of his final ceremony, Mayor Parker will be escorted into the Council’s Function Room by officers of the New Zealand army and navy.
Deputy Mayor Ngaire Button will speak in tribute to the Mayor and his dedication to the ceremonies.
“Mayor Parker has put in tremendous effort to ensure each service is a unique and rewarding experience for the new citizens,” says Deputy Mayor Button.
“His passion and devotion for the local community is reflected in the thousands of citizenship statuses he has bestowed during his time in office.”
All councillors have been invited to attend the ceremony which will be held at 6.30pm in the Council’s Civic Office Function Room.
