Major refurbishment for Flaxmere Community Centre

Date:          September 16th 2013

Major refurbishment for Flaxmere Community Centre

A major refurbishment of the Flaxmere Community Centre (FlaXrock) will see the facility closed to the public for the next 4 months.

The Community Centre is located alongside the Flaxmere Library and includes a sports hall, meeting rooms, a gym, and a climbing wall. The centre is designed to provide opportunities for recreation and meeting areas for groups within the Flaxmere Community while the climbing wall and sports floor provides sporting facilities for use by the wider community.

The refurbishment project will include the construction of a new foyer which will become the entrance to the Community Centre and the Flaxmere Library. Other changes include the construction of new toilet facilities, improved ventilation in the climbing wall area and an addition to the storage area. Improvements to the library will include an extension to the building that will enable the existing space to be reconfigured and the addition of some new meeting space.

Flaxmere Councillor Henare O’Keefe says” I am delighted that this project can finally proceed. There has been plenty of discussion over what changes could be made and I believe that the additions and alterations that have been agreed upon will be of major benefit to the users of the centre.”

Fellow Councillor Jacoby Poulian says “It is important that this project meets the current and future needs of the community. It has taken time to consult with all the relevant parties to come up with a concept that will take the Community Centre forward. The Library and Community Centre are recognised as valuable assets for the people of Flaxmere and the wider community. This project will help strengthen both facilities for the future.”

The Community Centre closed last week to allow the $1.5m project to begin while the Flaxmere Library will close early next month to allow the building alterations to be undertaken. A temporary facility will be provided during the construction period that will allow library users to access a small number of services. Details of those services and the location of the temporary facility will be announced closer to the date of the closure.

Both facilities are expected to be available to the public in 4-5 months
