Senior students teach new sport to juniors

Senior Porirua College students are teaching a new sport to Brandon Intermediate pupils during the next two weeks as
part of their own leadership skills and sport delivery programme.
The 18, Year 13 Porirua College students have participated in Ignite Sport youth development programmes during the past
four years. Now it’s their opportunity as Sports Leaders to coach other students and replicate the training they’ve had.
They are literally ‘passing it forward’ to students in a similar low-decile school as they are from.
The Sports Leaders will teach Speedball, a new sport based on Tchoukball but adapted by Ignite Sport for New Zealand
students and conditions. It is an inclusive combination of Netball and Handball with six players on the court at once.
Ignite Sport coordinator Kevin Goldsbury says the Sports Leaders will deliver the programme to 300 intermediate pupils
during six sessions.
“They’ll be teaching the sport’s fundamentals skills and refereeing as well as focussing on motivation, encouragement
and character development. These are all the lifestyle skills Ignite Sport has encouraged in these students since Year
10,” says Kevin.
“This group of young men have made huge leaps in realising their potential both in sport and in education, given school
for them hasn’t always been easy. They’re now all completing their final year with many holding senior leadership roles
at Porirua College and in the community. We are very proud of their achievements both now and what they will do as
future leaders,” says Kevin.
The students were recently honoured and received graduation certificates at an Ignite Sport function featuring SKYCITY
Breakers point guard CJ Bruton and the brand owners, Paul and Liz Blackwell.
