Communist League stands in Auckland Council election
The Communist League is standing two candidates in the Auckland City Council election, Annalucia Vermunt for mayor and Baskaran Appu for the council's Manukau Ward.
Vermunt, 45, is a postal worker. She is a trade union activist and campaigner for the rights of women and Maori.
Appu, 47, is a factory worker. He also has campaigned for workers rights as well as for the rights of immigrants and against racism.
"The Communist League believes that ongoing unemployment and the attacks working people face on our wages, conditions and rights are a consequence of the global crisis of the capitalist system," said Vermunt in a statement announcing the campaign.
"We are calling for a massive, government-funded public works programme to create jobs and to build the houses, schools, hospitals, public transport, and other amenities and infrastructure that working people need."
"We also propose a massive increase in the minimum wage in order to raise the living standards of all working people, including casual, youth, female, and immigrant," she said.
"We are not offering election promises," she added. "Rather, we are seeking to build a movement with other working people to act in our own interests independently of the bosses and their ruling parties."
