Sir Lloyd Geering, the Big Bang and God
Provocative commentator on theological issues Sir Lloyd Geering will speak at the Hastings Library on Monday 7th October.
Sir Lloyd’s topic will be “Humanity’s Place in the Cosmos - what does it mean today to be a human being?” The theme is based on his latest book, ‘From the Big Bang to God’.
Friends of the Library spokesperson Richard Peach says “We are extremely lucky to be able to host this talk and recommend people get their tickets promptly. Sir Lloyd’s session at the recent Auckland Writers and Readers Festival sold out quickly and attracted over 1400 people.”
Sir Lloyd will aim to show that the commonly supposed conflict between religion and science arises from a failure to appreciate the role of what he calls, the ‘human thought world’. The realm of the gods, created by human imagination, was the ancients’ way of understanding nature. For them it was both their science and their religion.
Sir Lloyd Geering holds NZs highest honour, member of the Order of New Zealand, but is possibly best known from a 1967 court trial, where he faced charges of heresy for his controversial statements.
A former Presbyterian minister and professor of religious studies, his books include the bestselling God in the New World, Christianity without God, The Greening of Christianity and The World to Come: From Christian past to global future. His last book was Such is Life: A close encounter with Ecclesiastes.
Sir Lloyd Geering will speak on Monday 7th October from 7pm. Tickets to this Friends of the Libraries fundraiser are $10.00 and available from Hastings District Libraries.
