Council approves Sumner Village Centre Master Plan
Christchurch City Council has approved a community-led plan for the rebuild and recovery of Sumner Village Centre.
“Those who helped shape the Sumner Village Centre Master Plan will welcome it getting final approval,” says the Council’s Urban Design and Regeneration Unit Manager, Carolyn Ingles.
The plan sets out the vision, framework and action plan for the Village Centre.
The Master Plan reflects the wishes of the tight-knit community, says Ms Ingles.
“The establishment of a Joint Advisory Group enabled the community to guide the development of the plan and help determine the future for the Village Centre, which had been badly affected by the earthquakes.
“People said they wanted strong links to the beach, to retain the boutique shopping Sumner was known for, a variety of spaces to gather and meet, and pedestrian-friendly streets. The Master Plan sets out how best to achieve these aspirations,” says Ms Ingles.
“Leadership and guidance, first from the Sumner Urban Design Group, then from the Joint Advisory Group has facilitated a collaborative approach, enabling the community voice to really come through in the vision and actions.”
Work will now commence on formatting the final draft version for publication.
