For immediate release 3 September 2013
Kawerau Woodfest 2013 will once again take over the township of Kawerau during the 13 – 15 September. There will be a wide variety of attractions, food and activities for all age groups to enjoy.
A 40 strong classic truck convoy will roll into town on both Saturday and Sunday with the EBOP vintage car club combining forces on Sunday to ensure a spectacular selection of restored vehicles of all shapes and sizes. Be lining the street by 10am on both days to see this fine display.
The Wood Chopper Comp (Rotorua Axemen) will take place on Saturday on Prideaux Park where there will also be sideshows and fun rides to keep the young amused and it will be the central action area for the deft Bike Trials Comp, which was a fine crowd pleaser last year with bike trialists jumping and hopping over diggers, lumber and whatever they can find!
Prideaux Park will be the central location to fill up on a wide variety of festival foods and take in the exhilaration of the KFL Pro-Logger Chainsaw Races on Saturday. Whilst on Sunday a new team challenge, Te Wananga O Aotearoa Block, Strop & Strawline Challenge, will take place and will be a demonstration of various forestry based skills incorporated into an obstacle course timed race.
Industrial site tours to Norske Skog and Mighty River Power will be available on Saturday at 10am, 12 & 2pm. Registration is essential at the Kawerau Information Centre, 323 6300 (gold coin donation only). The awesome Woodfest Truck Pull will commence at 10am in front of the Info centre on Saturday. Still places available for teams to get on the pull!
WoodBugs is a brand new wood sculpting symposium during the entire week. Starting on Monday 9th near the Ron Hardie Rec Centre we can expect the amazing transformation of trunks to taonga by some exceptional artists. Local favourite Joe Kemp will be there whilst two of New Zealand’s top artists, Anna Korver and Steven Molloy from New Plymouth will also be attending.
Local arborist Asher Boyer from Ash & Oak, ALFA contractors will be demonstrating his skills on a Prideaux Park tree. The Rotary Craft Market will take place in Jellicoe Court on Saturday along with additional opening hours all weekend at the Sir James Fletcher Museum.
Along with New Zealand’s premier National Woodskills Competition in the Ron Hardie Rec Centre, there is plenty for everyone to enjoy at Kawerau Woodfest.
