Residential chapter to drive new era of central city living

Exciting new opportunities are set to open up for central city living in the new rebuilt Christchurch, says Christchurch Central Development Unit (CCDU) director Warwick Isaacs.

The CCDU is developing a draft Residential Chapter of the Christchurch Central Recovery Plan to provide a vision and framework for a new era of residential living within the city’s four avenues.

"While they have caused a lot of destruction, the earthquakes have also provided a chance to create a world-class new central city, and a big part of that is making it a great place to live," Mr. Isaacs says.

"The Residential Chapter will lay out a vision for what central city living may look like in future – a range of dwellings where people are within easy walking distance of work and inner city attractions and nightlife."

"Our goal is to have more than 20,000 people living in the central city in the longer term to ensure we have a city that is vibrant and prosperous. We see an important part of this being the establishment of a new inner city community within the East Frame, with 1500 to 2000 people living around a central park linking to a large family playground and retail and hospitality."

The CCDU is working with the Christchurch City Council and other partners to prepare the draft Residential Chapter.

The draft chapter will include proposed changes to the District Plan Living Zones based on the city council’s review earlier this year, as well as initiatives aimed at stimulating residential activity in the central city.

The public will have a chance to have a say on the draft chapter when it is released for consultation later this year.
