Councillors must bin minimum parking requirements - Generation Zero
Youth organisation, Generation Zero, is calling for Auckland’s Councillors to bin minimum parking requirements during Unitary Plan workshops today.
Dr Sudhvir Singh, spokesperson for Generation Zero; “Auckland Councillors have crucial decisions to make on Auckland’s future in the next couple of days. They can continue the failed model of the past by forcing all new homeowners to provide two car parks when they build their homes or let Aucklanders decide for themselves.”
Today the Council will consider an amendment to the Unitary Plan, which prescribes that every residential unit with two or more bedrooms requires at least two off-street parking spaces.
Dr Singh: “The Plan needs to bin the minimum parking requirements as they put an incredible cost on new homeowners, locks the next generation into car-dependency, and drives urban sprawl, carbon pollution and traffic congestion.”
Statistics show New Zealanders are driving less and modest investment in public transport in Auckland has seen patronage increase significantly.
Dr Singh: “Trends show that Aucklanders are seeking transport choices and are moving away from their cars, especially the next generation. The move towards public transport should be reflected in Auckland’s planning documents and minimum parking requirements should be relegated to the past.”
