$30,000 funding boost to bring KiwiSport to more
schools
More Hutt Valley school kids will have access to KiwiSport programmes thanks to a major funding boost from The Lion Foundation.
The $30,000 grant means that the KiwiSport Fundamentals Project, which operates in schools throughout the region, can be offered to more students. As a result of this funding boost, KiwiSport is able to be delivered to over 26,000 students over the 2013 calendar year.
"We're already working with students across the Hutt Valley but the support of The Lion Foundation means we can now cater for in excess of 100 schools in the region," said Mike Mercer, Sport Relationship Manager at Hutt City Council, the administrators of KiwiSport.
"The support of The Lion Foundation and their belief in the objectives of KiwiSport puts us in a much better position financially to be able to cater for more schools.
"Being able to increase the availability and accessibility of sport opportunities for school-aged children really benefits the whole community because active kids are fitter and healthier," said Mike Mercer.
KiwiSport programmes increase opportunities for school-aged children to play sport and it teaches kids the skills they need to do that successfully. As part of their school learning, KiwiSport develops their movement abilities and encourages kids to set up habits to be active, which will benefit them for life.
Without the money from The Lion Foundation, KiwiSport would have been unable to deliver the programme to so many students.
Since the KiwiSport Fundamentals Project began in 2009, more than 42,000 students across the Greater Wellington region have taken part in one or more of the programmes. Hutt Valley students account for about 39 percent of these students.
