Business delighted at flyover green light

Wellington Employers’ Chamber of Commerce is delighted that the City Council has finally agreed to support the flyover at the Basin Reserve – even if it was by one vote.

“This is great news. It was a while coming and probably travelled a more precarious route than it should have, but we got there.

“Common sense has prevailed, even if only just, and now the NZ Transport Agency can press on and fix this major congestion point in the city’s and the region’s transport infrastructure.

“The council’s earlier indecision threatened to put this project back and jeopardise government transport funds on other nearby projects, including a proposed second Mt Victoria tunnel, and although there clearly remains doubt in some councillors’ minds, at least there were enough wise heads.

“In a submission yesterday before the council’s vote, we told councillors it was imperative the flyover proceed, and I’m delighted enough of them listened.

“It’s good that the council was able to achieve commitments to mitigate the visual impacts of the bridge, because we recognise the importance of good urban design and ensuring a ‘good-looking Wellington’. The mitigation proposals outlined in the paper and agreed to by NZTA are very positive and will enhance the look without compromising transport efficiency.”
