Life Flight Rescued a Teenager After a Mountain Bike Jump Went Wrong This Afternoon.

A Life Flight team, including a Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic, responded to the fire breaks at the top of Summit Road, Fairfield, Lower Hutt at aprox 4:30 this afternoon.

On our arrival we found a Lower Hutt teenager who was injured when a jump over a ramp went wrong.  The teen was thrown from his bike and suffered a broken wrist and other cuts and bruises.  He was being attended to by a group of his friends who he had been riding with. 

A WFA road crew who walked up to the incident arrived at about the same time as the helicopter crew.

“He was smart and lucky to be wearing a good helmet” says Dave Greenberg, Life Flight crewman.  “The helmet obviously hit the ground very hard and took the brunt of the force; no helmet and he would have undoubtedly suffered some head injuries”.

The teen was transported to the Wellington Hospital Emergency Department at about 5:20pm and is currently being treated.

The helicopter responded to the Lower Hutt job on its way back from the Koromiko job in Marlborough.  At around 2:30 this afternoon the helicopter team was sent by the NZ Rescue Coordination Centre for a beacon search in the area.  Additional information came in that a young woman had injured her arm while tramping with a group.  Unfortunately the group was in the clouds and the helicopter could not get close enough to winch her out.  Blenheim Police were working with the group to ensure the woman was walked out of the bush safely.
