Art Helps Health: Wellington art group to raise funds for surgical research

Wellington art co-operative, ARTrove, is hosting a fundraiser next month for the locally-based Surgical Research Trust.
The art exhibition fundraiser, on Thursday September 5 at the Asteron Life Centre foyer opposite Wellington Railway
Station, will showcase the work of 14 talented Wellington artists.
A portion of each opening night sale will go to the Trust to assist it to fund vital research into paediatrics,
orthopaedics, diabetes and heart and brain conditions
ARTrove was started in 2011 by three Wellington artists, Adele Eagleson, Karen Hamilton-Smith and Kirsty Fyfe, who are
all passionate about creativity and about sharing affordable art with the public.
Karen Hamilton-Smith said the group was delighted about funding the Trust at this year’s opening night of the 2013
exhibition.
“The Trust is an unsung hero as it has a low profile with the general public but it undertakes wide-reaching and
important research that has benefits for both current and future generations of patients.”
The Trust was set up in 1991 by Professor Geoffrey Horne (ONZM) to fund local and national surgical research. Prof Horne
is a renowned orthopaedic surgeon and the former clinical professor at the University of Otago Wellington. The Trust has
funded about 90 research projects since it was established, including research undertaken by paediatrician Prof. Kevin
Pringle at Wellington Hospital and facial reconstruction surgeon Prof. Swee Tan at Hutt Hospital.
ARTrove 2013 opens on September 5 and runs until Wednesday 11. A core group of 12 artists will exhibit for the week
while there will be special guest artists whose work will be on show and for sale on opening night only.
The group of 12 includes Adele Eagleson, Amie McCarron, Anna Stichbury, Brian Nelson, Clare Matthews, Karen
Hamilton-Smith, Karina Rossiter, Kirsty Fyfe, Kylie Law, Maude Heath, Nicki Stewart and Paul Vincent.
The opening night guest artists include Bruce Luxford and Ian Hamlin.
