Exceptional snow conditions for Mt Ruapehu’s Turoa Ski Area
Turoa hits a 2m snow base
15 August 2013 - Mt Ruapehu’s Turoa Ski Area is basking in great snow quality and trail conditions, and has now reached
a 2m snow base.
Fresh snow is forecast into the weekend, and so far an average of 22cm has fallen on the Turoa slopes and 20cm at
Whakapapa Ski Area over the last three days.
Chris Thrupp, Turoa Ski Area manager says that 2012 was a good snow year for Mt Ruapehu, but this year Turoa Ski Area
has significantly more snow and more trails open.
“The top to bottom snow coverage is brilliant, with Turoa’s average snow base now sitting at 202cm. This time last year
we only had one trail to the base open, we now have four.”
“For the first time in two winters we have an XL terrain park and are preparing to open the Jumbo lift to the upper
mountain for this weekend because of the exceptional snow cover.”
“The overall experience and quality of conditions is excellent, and it’s expected to improve with the current snow
falling on the ski area.”
Mr Thrupp says anecdotal feedback from South Island visitors is that Turoa’s snow conditions are the best in the
country.
Whakapapa Ski Area Manager, Steve McGill says the new snow falling is falling top to bottom.
“The snowfall couldn’t have come at a better time. It is a great bonus for this time of year, we are still mid-season
and there is still spring skiing to look forward to,” says Mr McGill.
“Spring is an exciting time for us, as Mt Ruapehu boasts some of the best late season skiing conditions, unique to New
Zealand - nice wide open trails of sun softened snow.”
Mt Ruapehu is expected to stay open until Labour Weekend in late October.
