Community Groups Benefit from Council Fund

Three local community groups have been given a helping hand from Waikato District Council’s Rural Ward Discretionary Fund.

Whatawhata Country Tennis Club, Ngaruawahia Volunteer Rural Fire Force, and the Mangatangi Historical Group were all recently granted financial assistance for various endeavours.

The Fire Force received $5000 towards the operating costs of the local water tanker, while Whatawhata Country Tennis Club received $3850 to replace tennis net posts and $4,400 went to the Mangatangi Historical Group towards signage for a new heritage trail.

In an application to the Council, the Mangatangi Historical Group said that the objective of their project was ‘to identify, research, document and mark sites of significant historic and heritage value’.

The project will involve developing historical sites of significance by installing signage throughout the villages and surrounding rural areas of Mangatawhiri, Mangatangi, Maramarua and Miranda. Some of the sites to be included are Marae and pa sites, early settler properties, school sites, quarries and coal mine sites.

Waikato-Taniui was also granted $2500 towards the cost of the Mangatawhiri 150 year commemorations, which were held at Mangatawhiri last month. A further $2,500 was provided for this event from Council’s Event Fund.

The Council’s Chief Executive Gavin Ion said the committee agreed all the funding applicants were worthy recipients of a grant, and their ventures would benefit the community.
