Local business woman and qualified accountant, Kim Mayne, has thrown her hat into the election ring standing for the
Ahuriri Ward. Issues such as attracting new business to the region and assisting the businesses currently here appeal to
Kim. She believes that our city’s future prosperity is through securing job growth, keeping our community fully engaged.
“I am sure there is much the council can do to facilitate such activity” Kim said. Additionally, she is keen to see more
emphasis on stopping people using the streets like convenient rubbish sites. Adding “People who choose to litter the
streets totally disrespect the citizens, it is simply not on. We should be able to walk and cycle without dodging
rubbish and broken glass. As a tourist city it is all about appearance so it is in everyone’s best interest to keep it
clean. Tourism is something we need to encourage and memories of good holiday destinations always include friendly
people, pleasant surroundings and interesting activities.”
As for amalgamation, “I am trying to keep an open mind, however presently I am just not seeing anything that makes me
keen on amalgamating. Napier is pretty special and whilst proponents hype about the benefits, there is surely much that
could be achieved by closer working relationships and alliances between councils. It is easy to get swept up in
financial savings and actually forget about the social cost" she commented.
At 53 Kim was born in Napier and has a passion for her home town. Like many youth, Kim left Napier as a teenager and
started a career in the shipping industry where she held various leadership, operational and management positions,
including, after returning to Napier, at the Port of Napier. Mid career she won an industry educational award studying
at the University of Plymouth in the UK, graduating with distinction in logistics, shipping and transport management.
In more recent years Kim changed direction and now, with husband Ian, operates accounting business, Action Tax and
Accounting Limited. “I Love Tax” is her hallmark statement.
For the past eight years Kim has been the President of the Alzheimers Society Napier, a voluntary position. She has
steered the Society through a period of unprecedented growth which will shortly culminate into a move to new larger
premises. Also active in her local Rotary Club, Ahuriri Sunrise, Kim received a Paul Harris Rotary award in 2012 for
services to Alzheimers and Rotary.
Married to Ian for the past 20 years, they have one son Michael, soon to join the NZ Navy. With their two dogs, they
love being part of the Napier community and want to see it continue as a wonderful place in which to live.
