Chemical toilets delivered to Southland
Emergency Management Southland has received 200 brand new portable chemical toilets which can be used in emergencies.
The toilets were transported from Christchurch by Mainfreight, which donated the use of a truck, a driver and diesel to
get them to Invercargill.
Emergency Management Advisor Sandra Miller says the portable toilets are a valuable asset and enhance the region’s
response capability. “There is not a great supply of portable toilets in Southland. If we ever need some now, they are
ready to go.”
The toilets were surplus to requirements after the Christchurch quakes, and are stored by Emergency Management Southland
on behalf of the Ministry of Civil Defence.
“Previously we would have been relying on hire companies, which means there could have been serious delays in
availability,” Mrs Miller says. Now we can start providing emergency toilets to households in need straight away.”
The toilets are not enclosed ‘portaloos’ but can be used to increase the capabilities of existing facilities in schools,
town halls and stadiums.
