Hundreds of fish for Capital Trout Centre
More than 1000 rainbow trout will be released tomorrow (Thurs, August 15) into the pond at the Capital Trout Centre at
Happy Valley in Wellington – all ready for the next kid’s ‘fish out’ day.
The trout are being carted from Fish & Game’s Ngongotaha hatchery in the ‘live trout truck.’
Each year hundreds of young anglers get a chance to catch their first fish at the open days. Expert anglers from the
Wellington Flyfishers Club turn out to help the youngsters get started. The next open day is on Sunday, September 1.
Fish & Game NZ Wellington Regional Manager Phil Teal said that all the fish are of “catchable size” but a few larger ones are
put in spice things up – providing some kids an even bigger thrill.”
Mr Teal says it’s a great community facility and worthwhile event. “It’s a great opportunity for young children to hook
their first fish and maybe get hooked on a fun sport.”
He says the children have a lot of fun at the fish out days and “gain new skills, learn some patience, and connect with
the outdoors.”
During the 2012 – 2013 season the Centre held 31 separate events which included 5 public Open Days. The remainder were
school, family and other groups that are able to book the Centre and run events in conjunction with Wellington
Flyfishers Club members.
In addition to the children’s fish out days, there are additional one-off events for groups such as children with cancer
or hearing impaired, and scout groups.
A booking system is now in operation given the popularity of the days. People can book at Steve's Fishing Shop in
Wellington, Hamills in Thorndon, or the Hutt Valley Hunting and Fishing store.
