Final days for nominations for local authority elections

Final days for nominations for local authority elections

ROTORUA 13.08.13: Rotorua residents are being reminded that nominations close this week for the 2013 local authority elections.

People only have until 12 noon on Friday [16 August] to lodge nominations for the elected positions of mayor, district councillor, community board member, regional councillor and district health board.

RDC Corporate & Customer Services group manager Jean-Paul Gaston is encouraging candidates to get their nominations in to the council well ahead of 12 noon on Friday to avoid the risk of missing the cut if for some reason their application is not in order when lodged.

“By law correct completed nominations must be received before 12 noon. Unfortunately we have no flexibility for extending the deadline by even one minute for anyone running late, providing incorrect details or missing important information on their nomination forms.

“These elections are about local people playing a direct role in decision-making for the future of their local community. Standing as a candidate for a council or DHB is a prime way of being actively involved in determining that future.”

Anyone interested in standing for election can pick up a candidate information pack from the council, and these include a nomination form and candidate’s handbook. Packs are also available from the RDC website, rdc.govt.nz, or from the Rotorua District Council Civic Centre on Haupapa Street.

Voting papers for the postal vote will start being dispatched by mail to enrolled voters from 20 September and preliminary results are expected to be announced on the afternoon of 12 October.
