Fishing mags to host snapper cuts debate
New Zealand's three major recreational fishing magazines have joined forces to organise a public debate on the proposed cuts to snapper limits in the Snapper 1 fishery.
The event, to be held at Auckland's Bucklands Beach Yacht Club on August 20, will be hosted by NZ Fishing World, NZ Fishing News and NZ Bay Fisher magazines.
Members of the public will be given the opportunity to put questions to a panel of invited guests including Labour Party leader David Shearer, a representative from the NZ Federation of Commercial Fishermen, aLegaSea representative and the editors of the magazines.
National Party's MP for Auckland Central, Nikki Kaye, has also been invited to the debate.
Minister for primary industries Nathan Guy – the man who will make the final decision on snapper management - declined the invitation saying it would be "inappropriate to engage in a public debate". The ministry has also declined to send any staff to the event.
