Wellington East Girls' College Event - Pink Lei Week
We are the Media Prefects of Wellington East Girls' College and are currently at the start of our take on the global
campaign, Pink Shirt Day - Pink Lei Week. The prefects from Wellington East Girls’ College have organised a week full of
activities and events to celebrate diversity and come together as a community to support each other and promote positive
relationships.
"Pink Shirt Day is a national campaign aimed to raise awareness about the power to prevent bullying. Pink Shirt Day aims
to reduce bullying by celebrating diversity and promoting the development of positive social relationships. An annual
event celebrated throughout New Zealand and the world, Pink Shirt Day helps to create a New Zealand where all people
feel safe, valued and respected." - Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand
Following the worldwide initiative of Pink Shirt Day, Wellington East Girls' College created a week filled with events
and activities to raise money for Youthline and encourage positive attitudes in our school community. These activities
include:
-A dance party
-Cyber-safety talks
-Shared lunches
-Performances
-Bake sales
-Selling of pink leis
We are having a school-wide pink mufti day on Friday the 9th of August at lunchtime (1pm) and are having a whole-school
photo with over a thousand students with everyone wearing pink clothes and their leis.
We have also been working with other colleges in the community, Rongotai College, St Patricks College and St Catherine’s
College to spread the message to the wider Wellington community. A promotional video has been made and the other schools
are working towards organising their own events in the near future.
We'd love for you to document and spread the word around Wellington about what we're doing and the cause we're
supporting.
Thanks,
Flora Lu & Ekta Nathu
