Affordable Auckland Announces Whau Candidate

Wayne Davis has announced today that he will be standing as a candidate for the Council ward of Whau as well as the Whau local board for the Affordable Auckland party. “The overbearing rates regime of the current council is having a negative effect on housing affordability and I believe Affordable Auckland has the best policies to tackle this problem.”

Mr. Davis has a huge amount of experience in local government, having sat on the Waitakere City Council for three terms, starting with the inaugural council in 1989. He was also elected to the New Lynn Community board in the 2008 by-election.

“Auckland council needs to adopt policies that will make our local economy internationally competitive. One of the most effective ways to do this is by pursuing of plan for real rates cuts, not just a cap on increases. We can’t cheat by borrowing to off-set rates increases like the current mayor has done, because this guarantees higher rates in the future and will do nothing to attract more business to our region.”

Wayne Davis also argues that the current council tries to do too much and should focus on the core responsibilities set down by central government. “While being fiscally responsible with ratepayers money, I believe out of the core services we do fund, facilities for our youth and elderly should be prioritised.”

Mr. Davis joins two other candidates standing for Auckland council on the Affordable Auckland ticket. The others are Stephen Berry, standing for Mayor and Waitemata & Gulf and Niko Kloeten, standing for Franklin. More candidate announcements will be made soon.
