Rotorua District Council meeting pays tribute to Cr Waaka

Rotorua District Council meeting pays tribute to Cr Waaka
Councillors decide to leave seat vacant

At last night’s meeting of Rotorua District Council former long-serving councillor Maureen Waaka was remembered by her council colleagues.

This full council meeting was the first since Councillor Waaka passed away on 1 July after a short illness. She had served on the council for 18 years.

A moving tribute at the beginning of the meeting acknowledged the loss of Mrs Waaka to the council and community, and a floral tribute was placed on the council table in front of her empty seat.

Later during the meeting councillors addressed the issue of the vacancy on the council and decided to leave the seat vacant until the coming local authority election.

The council’s only other option under local government legislation, that of appointing another person to the council, was deemed unnecessary given the closeness of the election date.
