Wellington Zoo to
support Proyecto Titi for Cotton Top Tamarins
Wellington Zoo is delighted to recognise our newest conservation partner: Proyecto Titi, an organisation working to help protect critically endangered Cotton Top Tamarins and their natural habitats in Colombia.
“The Cotton Top Tamarins at Wellington Zoo are amazing ambassadors for their counterparts in the wild, so we’re very excited to connect Proyecto Titi with our visitors. We’re amazed at the success of Proyecto Titi in educating and empowering local communities to protect the natural habitats of these endangered primates. Wellington Zoo will be supporting Proyecto Titi for at least the next three years,” said Amy Hughes, Group Manager Community Engagement at Wellington Zoo.
Karen Fifield, Chief Executive of Wellington Zoo, is proud that Wellington Zoo is able to extend their conservation impact, “Conservation is at the heart of everything we do at Wellington Zoo. Last year, over 230,000 visitors enjoyed a day their Zoo, meaning that we can reach out to more conservation partners to connect our community with conservation projects around the world.”
“Zoos are a major player in species conservation and in nature conservation. Our new partnership with Proyecto Titi is another great step for us in encouraging our community to live in harmony with nature,” said Ms Fifield.
The Wellington Zoo Conservation Fund enables Zoo staff to contribute to local and international conservation projects like Proyecto Titi. The Conservation Fund is supported by proceeds from community events such as gold coin entry to the Zoo on Wellington Open Day, along with 10% of the proceeds from every Close Encounter.
